Ancient Iranian Ceramics From the Arthur M.Sackler Collections
The ancient potters took their inspiration in part from the natural world around them, creating ceremonial vessels in the form of rams, bulls, and stags. They were also deeply affected by the metal-working traditions of Iran, a land rich in copper. Some vessels, with a shiny burnished surface, imitate metal vessels in both shape and color. Ancient Iranian Ceramics from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections is the first book-length study devoted solely to this remarkable tradition. The volume illustrates 86 pieces in full color and includes more then 129 additional pieces in black-and-white. An introductory essay provides the archaeological setting for these striking works and traces both the artistic and technical developments including kiln design and the production of early stoneware. An illustrated appendix of forgeries will be of particular use to scholars and collectors. Specifications: |
