Blind Owl Press
Imprint:
A new imprint of Mazda Publishers devoted exclusively to the publication of literary
works in English by writers in exile. These works include fiction, poetry, plays, and also
the personal memoirs of established writers.
The name of the press is taken from The Blind Owl, the acclaimed
novel by the Iranian writer Sadeq Hedayat, who wrote and published his book in 1937 while
in exile in India. Artistically, this work is emblematic of the presss aspiration to
publish literature of similar distinctive merit that might not otherwise reach the
attention of the general reading public.
The press has initiated its series in 1998 by publishing a work by a native-born
Iranian, Saideh Pakravan, entitled The Arrest of Hoveyda. Thereafter the press
intends to publish up to four books annually and therefore invites submissions from
writers in exile from all countries. The editors would like to see samples (20-30 pages)
with outlines before considering whole manuscripts. The initial response time will be less
than two months. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with every submission,
otherwise your work will not be returned. Fax queries or electronic/disk mailings for
initial submissions are not accepted, nor will telephone calls or letters hasten the
process. Submissions will be returned, or the author will be contacted, after editorial
review of the proposal. |
