 History of the
Jews, like those of other people, is cloaked in the guise of metaphors, legends and myths.
In some instances the mythological encounters have replaced the historic events. The
underlying purpose of writing this book was to learn which portions of Jewish history are
based on documented anthropological evidence and which parts originated from mythology.
The book begins with the Hebrews' simple nomadic life, the slavery of some of the tribes
in Egypt and their exodus, the conquest of the "Promised Land," and finally, the
rise and the fall of ancient Israel. The second chapter focuses on the major crisis in the
religion, the rise of many religious sects and bloody struggles among them. The book then
follows the history of the Jews of the Middle Ages in the land of Christianity and Islam.
Settlement of the Jews in Spain and Portugal, and their expulsion in fifteenth-century is
the next topic reviewed. The fourth chapter focuses on the renewed interest in a return to
the Promised Land, Hassidic movement and heresy in Judaism, that represent three
troublesome issues for the Jewish establishment of the seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries.
The Age of Enlightenment, and its reflection in Jewish communities and migration of the
Jews to the new continent have been presented in chapters five and six. Chapter seven
focuses on the issue of animosity and hatred toward Jews. The many facets of Anti-Semitism
and its effect on world Jewry is discussed. Chapter eight is devoted to important social
issues Jewish communities are facing in the twentieth century. Political Zionism, the
position of the Social Democracy movement of the nineteenth century on the "Jewish
issue", the philosophical doctrine of National Socialism, World War II, the Holocaust
and its aftermath, and the establishment of the State of Israel are then highlighted.
Finally, the complicated Arab-Israeli issue and the status of the world Jewry at the end
of the second millennium brings this book to its close.
