PAITIMANA
Essays in Iranian, Indo-European, and Indian Studies

Volumes I & II

Edited by Siamak Adhami

The present double volume is dedicated to the eminent Iranist and Vedicist Hanns-Peter Schmidt. They consist of a series of articles on Iranian, Indian, and Indo-European topics written by some of the most prominent scholars of each field.  The volumes will be of particular interest to those involved in the linguistics, history, legal and religious studies of pre-modern Iran and India, as well as in Indo-European studies.

Reflecting the breadth and depth of the works of Schmidt and in celebration of  the contributions made by this eminent German scholar to the Iranian and Indian studies, a number of his colleagues and former students belonging to various fields present the results of their latest investigations.  The contributors to this volume include: B. Schlerath, J. Heesterman, and S. Jamison—on different aspects of Vedic studies; J. Duchesne-Guillemin, M. Witzel, A. Wezler—studies on post-Vedic Indian literature and laws; and G. Giannakis and H. Waltz—Indo-European studies.

The scholars contributing to the second, forthcoming volume are:

R.N. Frye, Sh. Shahbazi, M.R. Shayegan—Achaemenid and Sasanian history;
P.O. Skjærvø, M. Schwartz, W. Malandra, A. Cantera—Avestan and Zoroastrian studies;
R. Schmitt—Old Iranian onomastics as reflected in the works of Aristotle;
W. Sundermann, A. Panaino, C. Cereti, T. Daryaee—Middle Iranian studies;
S. Adhami—on Sasanian sphragistic monograms.

This volume is indispensable for the specialists in the three fields and is equally valuable for general readers interested in the current issues in Indian, Iranian, and Indo-European linguistics, history, legal and religious studies.
