S.H. Taqizadeh - W.B. Henning Correspondence, 1837-1966
Edited by Touraj Daryaee and Iraj Afshar
Forthcoming Fall, 2001
This volume contains the correspondence between the Iranian scholar and statesman, S.H.
Taqizadeh, and the German Orientalist, W.B. Henning. Their correspondence throws light on
the history of the discipline of Ancient Iranian Studies from a time when Europe was
beginning to become embroiled in World War II to the end of the 1960s. The letters discuss
the many problems in Old and Middle Iranian studies such as Mani and Manichaeaism,
Khwarazmian vocabulary, Middle Persian inscriptions, and Sasanian history. This
correspondence demonstrates the intense exchange of ideas between an Eastern and a Western
scholar and how they were able to aid each other in their endeavor from 1937 to 1966.
These exchanges are also important in that they throw light on the training of the major
scholars who studied with Henning and who were supported by Taqizadeh. Finally, the
letters preview the political and intellectual actors in a turbulent period of Persian
history and the efforts of these two scholars to promote their discipline and their
students in the face of political and financial difficulties.
