| Traditional Crafts in Qajar Iran Willem Floor
The sectors discussed include the manufacturing of ceramics, glass,
lighting materials, paper, metal are, soap, sugar and sweetmeats, and tanned
skins. The conditions of each selected industry is analyzed in detail and their
development throughout the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century are
discussed. This development includes how these sub-sectors tried to cope with
foreign imports, and the reason for their general failure in the face of cheaper
and superior European products. In all cases a detailed description of the
traditional technology (such as brick and glass kilns, damascening, metal
smelting, sugar milling, and tanning) is provided. The result is an astounding
addition to our existing knowledge on traditional crafts and how Iran of
the 19th century tried to deal with globalization before this term became
popular. Specifications:
