Winter Sleep: A Novel by Goli Taraqqi

Goli Taraqqi

Published in Persian in 1973 while the former Shah of Iran was still in power, the book illustrates the disorientation and "anomie" resulting from Iran's rapid and disruptive modernization process, and delves into the individual psyche of the average urban Iranian of the 1960's. The novel in essence shows how the individual's maturation process is sabotaged when one loses the support of one's traditional values and cultural heritage, in an excessively rapid transition to "modern" lifestyles.
